I was going through some of my older photos of NYC today, and came across this one that I shot from the Staten Island ferry looking out over New York Harbor. I had just come back from shooting in the city, after walking to the Brooklyn Bridge and then back again to Whitehall Terminal where the ferry docks. This is the from the same trip that I shot my photo “Back from Brooklyn”, one of my most popular images to date.
The ferry runs between Staten Island and Lower Manhattan, and along the trip it passes by Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. As we passed, I snapped this shot of the Statue and the loading docks in the distance, with the incredible cloud structure and light play provided by the sunset. The clouds were simply stunning, and I framed this to showcase more of the clouds than anything else. Even if the Statue of Liberty wasn’t in this frame, it would still be a dramatic photo because of those clouds! It’s amazing what you find when you go through a group of photos that you haven’t seen in a while, so I really encourage you to go through your archives and see what you come up with. I’ll be going back to NYC in 2 weeks, so I’ll have some fresh NYC photos soon! Take care everyone.
